Irish Top Detroit Mercy In The Battle At The Warren

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Fighting Irish men’s golf team topped Detroit Mercy by six strokes on Wednesday afternoon to take the Battle at The Warren title. Playing as individuals, senior Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif.) and sophomore Tom Usher (Bradford, England) led the way with minus-one 69 totals to tie for medalist honors. As a team, the Irish finished at 12-over par (292), while Detroit Mercy finished at 18-over par (298).

The starting Irish five consisted of seniors Carl Santos-Ocampo (Naples, Fla.) and Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Connor Alan Lee (Solana Beach, Calif.) and sophomores Chris Walker (The Woodlands, Texas) and Max Scodro (Chicago, Ill.). Scodro led the team contingent with an even-par 70, while Sandman turned in a two-over par 72. Also scoring for the Irish was Chris Walker’s 74 and Santos-Ocampo’s 76. Alan Lee carded a 77.

In addition to Fortner and Usher, junior Jeff Chen (Walnut, Calif.) shot a 76 and freshman Paul McNamara shot a 77 playing as individuals. Also playing as individuals, senior Kyle Willis (Lake Forest, Ill.) added a 79, junior Dustin Zhang (Calgary, Alberta) carded an 80 and senior Olavo Batista (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched an 83.

Detroit Mercy was led by Britt Pronk, who carded a one-over par 71. David Bryne and Sheldon and Keyte turned in a pair of 75’s and Simon Reyers shot a 77 to round out the team scoring. Jeff Clarridge shot a 79, which was not counted towards the Titans’ team score and, playing as an individual, Brian Sparks carded an 80.

The Irish return to action on Sun., April 18 at the BIG EAST Championship. This year’s tournament will be contested at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. and the men will play the Copperhead Course.
