NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame’s softball team (29-21, 13-7 BIG EAST) has earned the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and will face off against No. 5 seed Connecticut (22-20. 10-9 BIG EAST) in the first round at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 10 at the Belleville Softball Complex in South Bend, Ind., the league’s office announced this evening.

The Huskies are making their first appearance at the tournament since 2001 when they won the championship.

The Irish are vying for their sixth BIG EAST Championship title and were crowned the tournament championships last season. In 2006, Notre Dame defeated Providence, Pittsburgh and top seed and then No. 18 Louisville to capture the title.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this season, as the originally scheduled games for Sunday, April 15 was canceled due inclement weather.

DePaul earned the top seed after sweeping through the BIG EAST regular season with a perfect 20-0 record.

The BIG EAST Championship game will be broadcast live on CSTV at 5:30 p.m. on May 12. The winner of the single-elimination tournament will receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Irish have been selected to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last eight seasons.
