Irish Tied For Third After Opening Round Of The Landfall Tradition

Oct. 28, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf (306, +18) finds itself tied for third after the opening round of The Landfall Tradition played Friday at the Country Club of Landfall – Jack Nicklaus Course. Freshman Ashley Armstrong (74, +2) led the way for the Irish on the first day of play.

Auburn holds the team lead with a seven-shot cushion over the rest of the field after day one, carding an opening round 297 (+9), while Purdue sits second at 304 (+16). North Carolina joins the Irish in third with an identical 306 (+18). Individually, Purdue’s Paula Reto leads the field with the lone sub-par round of the tournament, a 71 (-1).

For the Irish, Armstrong’s round got off to a shaky start as she recorded back-to-back-to-back bogeys on holes three through five, but she rebounded with two consecutive birdies on holes seven and eight to finish the front side at one over (37). The Flossmoore, Ill., native then carded eight pars with one bogey on the back nine to finish her day two over (74) and in a tie for sixth overall.

Senior Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) both find themselves in a tie for 13th amongst the 90-member field after posting identical scores of 76 (+4). Huffer marked down three birdies on her day to go along with five bogeys, one double bogey and nine pars, while Nhim registered two birdies, six bogeys and 10 pars on her round.

The final tally counted toward the team total was that of freshman Kelli Oride (Lihue, Hawaii), who posted a first round 80 (+8). While Oride was hurt by four double bogeys on the round, she fought through the remaining 14 holes at even par, posting a pair of birdies on holes five and seven to go along with only two bogeys on holes two and four. After the first day, Oride is tied for 53rd overall.

Due to an unsigned scorecard, senior Katie Allare’s (Phoenix, Ariz.) opening round score was disqualified from being counted toward the team total.

The Irish get their second round of play underway Saturday off of the first tee with the first of their tee times going off at 9:20 a.m. (ET).
