Irish Tied For Eleventh After One Round Of Play At LSU Classic

March 13, 2009

BATON ROUGE, La. – The women’s golf team shot a plus-eight 296 in the first round of play at the 2009 Louisiana State University Golf Classic, tying the Irish for 11th-place. Freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS) led the Irish with an even-par 72 at the LSU golf club, a 6,424-yard course.

Huffer’s first round included a team-high five birdies and a minus-two 34 back-nine score (which actually was her first nine holes of the day since she started on hole 10). She dominated the par five’s as she recorded a minus-three mark on the four par-fives. Huffer is tied for 16th after one round of play, five shots adrift of Virginia’s Calle Nielson, the leader after one round of play.

Sophomore All-American So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) and senior captain Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) each carded plus-two 74 marks on the day. Park had a consistent day that included 14 pars and a birdie on the fourth. Maunu had consecutive birdies on the sixth and seventh holes on the way to recording her lowest round since posting a third-round 70 at the Heather Farr Memorial on September 30. It was also Park’s lowest round of the spring portion of Notre Dame’s season.

Junior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) also had her round counted towards Notre Dame’s 296 mark as she shot a plus-four 76. She birdied the fifth and added 12 pars.

Sophomore Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) rounded out the Irish contingent, notching a plus-eight 80 in her first round of play, including 10 pars.

The second round will take place tomorrow, March 14 with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. (CDT). The 8:00 a.m. start will be weather permitting as Friday’s planned 8:00 a.m. start was changed to a shotgun start due to impending weather conditions.
