Irish Third After First Two Rounds Of Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team carded a 36-hole total of 625 (316-309) during the first two rounds of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Monday at the par 72, 6,232-yard Alvamar Golf Club. The Fighting Irish are in third place heading into Tuesday’s third and final round. Pacing Notre Dame on the day was sophomore Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Collegiate Parkside Institute) and junior Jane Lee (Atlanta, Ga./Peninsula (Calif.)), who both carded 10-over par 154 totals to currently reside in a tie for sixth place, seven shots off the pace. Maunu carded rounds of 79 and a team-low 75, while Lee shot a 76 and 78.

Kansas, the host school for the tournament, is a top the team leaderboard with a 610 (304-306) total and Arkansas-Little Rock is second after registering a 624 (306-318) on the day. The Jayhawks’ Amanda Costner is leading the 88-golfer field as she fired a 147 (72-75), which included an even-par 72 in round one, which matched the low-mark of the day. Also firing a 72 in the opening 18 holes of play was Arkansas-Little Rock’s Anita Ojeda. She is second with a 149 (72-77).

Irish freshman Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) carded an 80 in the first round, yet responded nicely in the afternoon with a 76 to reside in a tie for 16th with a 12-over par 156. Senior co-captain Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) had an uncharacteristic day as she fired rounds of 81 and 80 for a 161 total, which places her tied for 35th.

Completing the scoring lineup for Notre Dame was freshman Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep), who registered a 164 (81-83) total and is tied for 47th. Senior Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) is competing as an individual entrant for the Fighting Irish and she posted a 174 (87-87) to rank 75th going into the final day of play.
