Irish Take Top Spot at Bonita Bay Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team hit the road for a three-day event hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The Fighting Irish took part in a dual-meet style competition, finishing the weekend a combined 8-3 in doubles and 13-8 in singles action.

On day one of the competition, the Irish took on Memphis. Notre Dame won three of four doubles as Page Freeman and Meghan Coleman earned a 6-3 win. Yashna Yellayi and Rylie Hanford added a 7-6 (3) win and Carrie Beckman and Nibi Ghosh earned a 6-4 win. In singles action, Freeman earned a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-2). Akari Matsuno added a three-set win over Dolavee Tumthong, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3. Hanford, Coleman and Beckman added straight-set wins to take five of the eight singles matches against the Tigers.

Day two saw the Fighting Irish take on the host Eagles. Freeman and Coleman combined for a doubles win, as the tandems of Yellayi and Hanford and Beckman and Julia Andreach earned 6-3, 6-2 wins, respectively. Notre Dame took five of the seven singles matches. Freeman, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win as Matsuno tallied a 6-0, 6-2 win. Ghosh tallied a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory as Hanford battled for a 7-6 (8), 6-4 win. Yellayi added a 6-2, 6-3 win.

The final day saw the Irish earn a similar result. Doubles against Purdue started with the Irish taking two of three matches. Freeman and Coleman earned a 6-2 win, with Beckman and Ghosh dominating their match at 6-1. The squads split the six singles matches. Matsuno was victorious with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win. Freeman earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Liz Norman and Coleman didn’t allow a point to Antonia Pareja, winning 6-0, 6-0.
