Irish Sweep Bulldog Brawl With Win Over Ohio

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –  Notre Dame women’s volleyball finished with a complete sweep of the Bulldog Brawl as they defeated Ohio University in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15) on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Irish advance to 5-5 on the season as they head into ACC play starting this upcoming Friday, Sept. 23. 

The Irish were led by Lucy Trump with 13 kills, followed by Lauren Tarnoff with 10 kills and Kaylyn Winkler with nine kills. Setter Phyona Schrader dished out 35 assists for the Irish and finished with 17 digs and eight kills. 

Set One

It was a close race for the lead as both the Irish and Bobcats struggled to pull away from the other. Tied at 9-9, the Irish began to separate themselves as they took the lead 17-12. Ohio brought it within two at 20-18, and with two back-to-back errors from OU, the Irish took the 22-18 advantage. Ohio tied it up at 22-22, but Notre Dame responded with kills from Trump and Claire Delaplane. Winkler sent home the final kill of the set to give Notre Dame set one 25-23. 

Set Two 

Notre Dame claimed the early 8-1 lead to start set two, but the Bobcats’ persistent efforts allowed them right back in the game as they went on a 9-2 run to make it an even 10-10. The set was tied again 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21, before the Bobcats took the lead at 23-21. Two kills from Avery Ross brought the Irish within one at 24-23, but Ohio claimed set two as they put away a kill to make it 25-23. 

Set Three 

The Irish came out strong to start the third, posting a 10-6 lead after falling in the second set. Ohio responded with an 8-4 run to tie it up at 14-14. Swapping points, it was an even 17-17 before the Irish went on an 8-4 run of their own as they took down the Bobcats 25-21, with the final kill coming from Tarnoff. 

Set Four

Notre Dame struggled to slow down the Ohio offense as the Bobcats established an early lead at 7-4. Hungry for the win, the Irish were relentless in their efforts to take home set four. Notre Dame went on a 10-2 run to take the lead 14-9. Kills from Trump and Winkler, coupled with a big-time block from Delaplane and Tarnoff, allowed the Irish to extend their lead to 17-10. The Irish would only give up five more points the rest of the set to take home the final set 25-15 and finish the weekend 2-0.

  • The Irish start ACC play this upcoming weekend as Notre Dame takes on Florida State on Sept. 23 and Miami on Sept. 25 before finally taking the floor at home on Sept. 30 against Georgia Tech.
