Irish sweep ACC women’s steeple, Shoaf wins shot put

RALEIGH, N.C. — The wins keep coming for the Irish at the 2023 ACC Championships. 

On Friday, junior Michael Shoaf won the men’s shot put title (19.41 meters) for the second consecutive year. Later in the evening, Notre Dame swept the women’s 3000-meter steeple event, as Olivia Markevich (9:40.65), Katie Thronson (9:44.11) and Sophie Novak (9:48.83) went 1-2-3, respectively. Markevich shattered both the meet and facility record, which was a 9:43.08 and was previously set in 2021 by NC State’s Hannah Steelman. 

Alaina Brady took second in the women’s heptathlon. Within the event, Brady won the 100-meter and took second in the javelin and the shot put. Irish senior Caroline Lewis finished just off of the podium in fourth (5594 points).

In the final event of the evening, Tom Seitzer took bronze in the men’s 3000-meter steeple. His time of 8:34.89 broke the Notre Dame record. 

The Irish women sit in fourth place heading into the final day, while the men are second. 

The 2023 ACC Championships will conclude on Saturday, and the schedule has changed to avoid any weather delays later in the day. The field events (high jump and discus) will begin at noon, while the track events are set to start at 3 p.m.
