Irish Surge To Third Place At Watersound Invitational

2022 Watersound Invitational Final Results

The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team started the 2022 spring season off with a strong finish at the Watersound Invitational at Shark’s Tooth Golf Course in Panama City Beach, Florida, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week.

A slow start in round one was followed by a team-combined low round of the tournament in the second (273) as the Irish surged from 13th to 5th place. Notre Dame then capped the event with the second-best team score in the third round (284) to finish in third place at 858 (-6), nine strokes behind Georgia Tech in first place.

The field featured 10 teams from the top 35 from the Golfstat.com team rankings, of which Notre Dame entered the weekend rated 15th. The event also was an early spring season Atlantic Coast Conference-heavy event with 12 ACC teams in the field. Notre Dame finished ahead of all but one fellow conference opponent – first-place Georgia Tech.

Palmer Jackson posted the top individual finish for the Irish, carding 73-68-71 for 212 (-4) to end up in a tie for fourth place. Davis Chatfield was a steady 72-71-70 for 213 (-3) and finished in a tie for ninth place. Taichi Kho sandwiched a blistering 66 in the second round (which matched individual champion Canon Claycomb from Alabama for the low round of the tournament) with a 76 in the first and 75 in the third to finish t-23 with 217 (+1).

The third place effort gives the Irish five consecutive top-three finishes in their last five tournaments. They will return to action March 7-8 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club.
