Irish Summer League Update

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With the collegiate baseball summer leagues approaching the midway point, numerous Notre Dame players have put together impressive numbers entering their respective All-Star breaks.

Some of the more noteworthy performances have included rising sophomore 1B Trey Mancini’s six home runs and 26 RBI with the Holyoke Blue Sox and rising junior C Joe Hudson’s six home runs with the Mystic Schooners. Mancini not only leads the New England Collegiate Baseball League in RBI, but has seven more than his closest competitor. Mancini and Hudson are tied with one another for the league-lead in round trippers.

Below is an update on how the Irish are faring thus far.

Sean Fitzgerald (McLean, Va.)
New Bedford Bay Sox (8-11, 5th Eastern Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Owns a 2-2 record with a 2.82 earned-run average in 22.1 innings of work … made four appearances, all starts … allowed 16 hits, struck out 25 and walked nine … opponents are batting just .190 against him … owns a 0.94 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) … averages team-best 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings pitched … struggled in summer’s first outing (four earned runs in 3.0 IP) … over last three starts, 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA in 19.1 innings of work … has allowed 12 hits and three earned runs over the stretch … has also fanned 22 in those three outings, including eight in each of his last two starts.

Charlie Markson (Whitefish Bay, Wis.)
New Bedford Bay Sox (8-11, 5th Eastern Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Batting .200 with three runs scored, eight hits and six walks in 15 games … successful on all four stolen base attempts … two multi-hit games.

Frank DeSico (Cleveland, Ohio)
Holyoke Blue Sox (15-10, 3rd Western Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Batting .247 with 15 runs scored, 18 hits, two doubles and six RBI … successful on all eight stolen base attempts … spent majority of the season in leadoff spot … committed just two errors in 22 games … owns a four-game hitting streak and has lifted batting average 47 points along the way (6-for-13 with five runs scored, one double and two RBI) … three multi-hit games, including three-hit outing against Keene on July 11.

Trey Mancini (Winter Haven, Fla.)
Holyoke Blue Sox (15-10, 3rd Western Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Batting .333 with 16 runs scored, 30 hits, seven doubles, one triple, six home runs and 26 RBI … owns a .400 on-base percentage, .633 slugging percentage and 1.033 on-base plus slugging percentage … tied with Irish teammate Joe Hudson for league-lead in home runs … also leads league in RBI … also ranks among the league leaders in the following categories: doubles (t-2nd), hits (t-4th), triples (t-8th) and batting average (10th) … seven multi-hit games … five multi-RBI games, including league-high six on July 4 (also smacked two home runs) … named NECBL Player of the Week on July 11.

Eric Jagielo (Downers Grove, Ill.)
North Shore Navigators (13-11, 2nd Eastern Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Batting .299 with 10 runs scored, 26 hits, four doubles and 16 RBI in 23 games … owns a .384 on-base percentage, .345 slugging percentage and .729 on-base plus slugging percentage … primarily playing third base … nine multi-hit games, including a quintet of three-hit affairs … four multi-RBI games … raised his batting average 49 points over the last eight games … hitting .387 (12-for-31) with three runs scored, two doubles and nine RBI over the stretch … went 3-for-4 with an RBI double against Team USA on June 26.

Dan Slania (Tucson, Ariz.)
North Shore Navigators (13-11, 2nd Eastern Division; New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Owns an 0-2 record with a 4.26 earned-run average in 19.0 innings of work … made six appearances, three of which have been starts … allowed 22 hits, struck out 11 and walked six … opponents are batting .282 against him … owns a 1.47 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) … first three appearances this summer came out of the bullpen (4.0 IP, 2 H, 0.00 ERA) … last three outings as a starter (15.0 IP, 20 H, 5.40 ERA) … allowed one earned run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work against Keene on June 25 (first start as a college player) … tossed 1.0 scoreless inning for Team NECBL in its 3-2 victory over Team USA on June 27.

Joe Hudson (Tampa, Fla.)

Batting .267 with 11 runs scored, 16 hits, one triple, six home runs and 16 RBI in 17 games … owns a .343 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage and .943 on-base plus slugging percentage … tied with Irish teammate Trey Mancini for league-lead in home runs … tied for seventh in the league in RBI … four multi-hit games, including four-hit outing against Keene on June 30 … four multi-RBI games … went 1-for-2 with an RBI single for Team NECBL in its 3-2 victory over Team USA on June 27.

Patrick Veerkamp (Fort Wayne, Ind.)
Grand Lake Mariners (9-15, 5th North Division; Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)

Owns a 2-1 record with a 3.71 earned-run average in 26.2 innings of work … made six appearances, four of which have been starts … allowed 27 hits, struck out 22 and walked five … opponents are batting .265 against him … owns a 1.24 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) … worked at least 6.0 innings in three of his four starts … struck out nine and walked one in season-best 7.0 innings against Lake Erie Monarchs on July 4.

Breck Ashdown (Tucson, Ariz.)
Lake Erie Monarchs (10-15, 4th North Division; Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)

Owns an 0-3 record with a 9.98 earned-run average in 15.1 innings of work … made five appearances, four of which have been starts … allowed 25 hits, struck out eight and walked nine … opponents are batting .379 against him … owns a 2.27 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) … hitless in nine official at-bats with a walk, RBI and sacrifice fly … surrendered just one earned run over first 10.0 innings of work.

Ricky Palmer (Orland Park, Ill.)
Lake Erie Monarchs (10-15, 4th North Division; Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)

Batting .226 with three runs scored, seven hits, two doubles and three RBI in 10 games … went 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI against the Grand Lake Mariners on June 23.

Chris Reinhart (Tampa, Fla.)

Batting .302 with nine runs scored, 19 hits, four doubles and six RBI in 18 games … owns a .348 on-base percentage, .365 slugging percentage and .713 on-base plus slugging percentage … 11 multi-hit games, including a three-hit outing against the Licking County Settlers on July 7.

Forrest Johnson (Hudson, Ohio)
Stark County Terriers (11-16, 3rd North Division; Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)

Batting .265 with three runs scored, 13 hits, one double, one triple and six RBI in 16 games … owns a .321 on-base percentage, .327 slugging percentage and .648 on-base plus slugging percentage … three multi-hit games … went 2-for-4 with a run scored, triple and three RBI against the Lima Locos on June 12.

Tommy Chase (Cohasset, Mass.)

Batting .164 with eight runs scored, 12 hits, three doubles and six RBI in 21 games … two multi-hit games, including a three-hit outing against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks on June 19.

Donnie Hissa (Iron River, Wisc.)
Seacoast Mavericks (4-21, 4th; Futures Collegiate Baseball League)

Owns an 0-4 record with a 3.71 earned-run average in 26.2 innings of work … made five appearances, all starts … allowed 29 hits, struck out 33 and walked 14 … opponents are batting .264 against him … owns a 1.65 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) … has worked at least 5.0 innings in each of his five starts … has struck out at least six in each of his five starts … punched out seven on three separate occasions … averages 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Bret Basilone (Springdale, Pa.)

Batting .190 with seven runs scored, 11 hits, three doubles and six RBI in 27 games … two multi-hit games.

Adam Norton (Highland, Ind.)
Morehead City Marlins (18-19, 3rd Southern Division; Coastal Plain League)

Owns a 1-1 record with a 2.61 earned-run average in 20.2 innings of work … made 11 appearances (tied for the team-high), all out of the bullpen … allowed 14 hits, struck out 21 and walked eight … opponents are batting just .203 against him … 2-for-6 at the plate with an RBI and run scored in three games (one start).

Alex Robinson (Dallas, Texas)
Battle Creek Bombers (24-14, 1st Southern Division; Northwoods League)

Batted .194 with two runs scored, seven hits and three RBI in 11 games before getting released … went 1-for-3 with a two-run single against the Green Bay Bullfrogs on June 27.

John Rodgers (Palm City, Fla.)
Geneva Redwings (16-13, 2nd Western Division; New York Collegiate Baseball League)

Batting .326 with six runs scored, 15 hits and five RBI in 18 games… ranks second on the team in hitting … owns a .446 on-base percentage, .326 slugging percentage and .772 on-base plus slugging percentage … three multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit outings against Allegany County Nitros on June 19 and Niagara Power on June 15 … batting average has not slipped below .318 the entire season.
