URBANA, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team had two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinal round and three singles entries continue in the main draw Saturday at the United States Tennis Association/International Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Junior Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) received a bye through the first singles round, then needed three sets to advance past Ohio State’s Kelsey Dieters 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sanders, the No. 98 ranked player in the ITA rankings, will face Michigan’s Amy Zhu Sunday.
Freshman Quinn Gleason (Mendon, N.Y.) won her opening contest of the main singles draw, defeating Northwestern’s Alicia Barnett 6-4, 6-4. Gleason advanced past No. 100 Mimi Nguyen (Michigan) via walkover, and will face No. 82 Allison Falkin (Illinois) Sunday.
Junior Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) opened her singles season with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Michigan State’s Marina Bohrer. Kellner, ranked No. 106 according to the ITA, is slated to face No. 12 Kate Turvy (Northwestern) in the next round.
The No. 36 ranked duo of Sanders and Julie Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) won their second doubles tilt in as many days, downing the team of Ana Vladutu and Rebeca Mitrea (DePaul) 8-2. The unbeaten Fighting Irish pairing will meet Ohio State’s Dieters and Kara Cecil Sunday at 10 a.m. (ET) for a berth in the semifinals.
Kellner and partner Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) kept their title hopes alive with an 8-4 win over Ohio State’s Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele in round of 16 action. Kellner and McGaffigan will square off with Marta Burak/Margarita Sadovnikova (Youngstown State) in quarterfinal play Sunday.
