NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame fencing program wasted no time in seeking out the best teams in the country to begin its collegiate slate Saturday at the Elite Invitational. After a full day of dual play, the Irish proved they are again among that group.

Both Notre Dame men’s and women’s squads came away with 4-1 records on the day at the Michanik Fencing Center at the University of Pennsylvania. The men defeated NJIT, Princeton, Yale and North Carolina, while the women bested Temple, Yale, Penn and Cornell. The men fell to Penn, while the women dropped to Princeton.

For the Irish men, foilists Hazem Khazbak and John Crumpler went 6-0 apiece, while Axel Kiefer turned in a 7-2 mark and Kristjan Archer came in at 6-3 on the day. Dylan French was 6-3 in epee for the Irish, while freshman Arsenii Panteleev went 8-4 on the day in sabre.

On the women’s side, newcomer Amanda Sirico was 8-4 on the day in epee while, in foil, sophomore Elyssa Kleiner posted an 8-2 record.

Members of the Irish will be back in action November 11-14 at the Junior North American Cup at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. The next collegiate event for the Irish will be the Penn State Open, slated for November 20 at the White Building at Penn State University.
