Irish Stand Tall At ITA And IU Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. & BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It was a successful day of competition for the University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team Friday as the team split between the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Michigan State and IU Regional Tournament at Indiana University.

With the main doubles draw kicking off Friday at the ITA regional, both Irish doubles squads remain standing after two rounds of play. Both pairs – No. 48 Brooke Broda and Monica Robinson, and Mary Closs and Allison Miller – earned first-round byes as top-16 seeds, and both picked up wins in the Round of 32.

Broda and Robinson defeated Eastern Illinois’ Kelly Iden and Grace Summers, 8-5, while Closs and Miller upended Mariya Kostyuk and Leshia Gadacz of Chicago State, 8-2.

Play continues Saturday with the first and second rounds of the singles main draw.

In Bloomington, the Irish picked up a handful of wins to round out the team’s day. Freshman Bess Waldram won her Flight 2 singles match over Indiana’s Alicia Robinson, 6-2, 2-6, 10-4, while she combined with senior Jane Fennelly to grab two doubles wins on the day. Sophomore Rachel Chong and freshman Zoe Spence fell in their first-round doubles match, but won in their first consolation match over Marquette’s Fleur Egging and Silvia Ambrosia, 8-5.

Play continues Saturday throughout the day.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
