Irish Softball To Combine Service Trip and Exhibition Stop at IUPUI Sept. 16

Sept. 12, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame softball team has added an additional game to its fall schedule, head coach Deanna Gumpf announced Wednesday.

The Fighting Irish will travel to Indianapolis Sept. 16 for a 12 p.m. (ET) first pitch against IUPUI at the IUPUI Softball Complex.

In an effort spearheaded by the softball members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, all Notre Dame sports teams have been collecting apparel and gifts for patients at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The softball team will be dropping off the gifts at the hospital before the game on Sunday.

The team will also be having lunch with the Parker family, who established Tatum’s Bags of Fun in conjunction with the Gabby Krause Foundation. The organization provides backpacks full of toys, games, and other gifts to children recently diagnosed with cancer.

Tatum Parker, an 11-year-old cancer survivor, visited Tatum Gumpf the day after she was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 2010 and gave Gumpf her own bag of fun. Tatum Gumpf, the daughter of head coach Deanna Gumpf, remains on her way to making a full recovery from leukemia.

The Notre Dame softball team will be donating three bags of fun during its trip to Indianapolis.
