Irish Snap Four-Game Losing Streak With An 18-8 Win Over California

March 22, 2005

Box Score

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon at the Loftus Center and they did it in a big way, knocking off the University of California, 18-8. The Irish had 10 players get on the score sheet led by junior Crysti Foote’s (Suffern, N.Y.) four-goal, two assist effort. Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) added three goals and an assist in the winning effort while three others had two goals each.

The win was the first for the Irish since an opening day, 16-10 win, on Feb. 27 at Ohio University and ends the slowest start (1-4) in the program’s nine-year history. Notre Dame is now 2-4 on the year while California falls to 4-4 overall. Liz Reifsnyder, Laura Cavallo and Molly Brady had two goals each to pace the Golden Bears offensive attack.

Foote, who had been held scoreless in each of the last two games, got the Irish attack going just 3:49 into the opening half with an unassisted goal. Reifsnyder would answer back just over a minute-and-a-half later at 5:30 to even the score at 1-1, but that was as close as Cal would get to the lead in the game.

Notre Dame ran off five unanswered goals in a 10:25 span to build a 6-1 lead with 11:13 left in the half. Kaki Orr (So., Darien, Conn.), Kerry Van Shura (Bel Air, Md.), Caitlin McKinney (Fr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) with two and Foote with her second of the game beat Golden Bear goalkeeper Hilary Lynch for the five-goal lead.

Brady snapped the Irish run with her first of the game with 10:46 left and Cavallo’s goal 26 seconds later made it a 6-3 game.

Fox quickly dashed any California’s idea of a comeback when she scored on a Foote set up at 22:25 and added a free-position goal at 24:44 for her first two of the afternoon. Lena Zentgraf (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) made it 9-3 at the half with her second goal of the season at 27:06.

The Golden Bears took it to the Irish right out of the gate to start the second half, running off the first four goals in a 3:59 span to cut the lead to 9-7. Reifsnyder (5:59), Brady (7:29), Jocelyn Paul (9:02) and Cavallo (9:57) beat Notre Dame goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) on four consecutive shots to get back into the game.

Foote answered that run with her third goal of the game at 11:38 to start the Irish on a nine-goal run to put the game away. Heather Ferguson (Fr., Newtown Square, Pa.) scored just 10 seconds later at 11:48 with her first of two in the game and the Notre Dame lead was back to four at 11-7.

Fox added her third goal, followed by Mary McGrath (Jr., Bryn Mawr, Pa.), Jackie Bowers (Sr., Springfield, Pa.), Orr and Ferguson with their second goals of the game, Jess Mikula (Sr., Chester, Md.) and Foote to make it an 18-7 game with 2:08 left in the contest. Brittany Aungier closed the scoring in the game, getting her goal with 1:23 left in the game.

The Irish peppered Lynch with 35 shots in the California goal as she made nine saves on the day. Dixon made six stops for the Irish to pick up her second win of the year.

Notre Dame takes to the road to play at Boston College on Sat., March 26 in a game that will be played at Cambridge, Mass. The BIG EAST opener for the Irish will start at 1:00 p.m.
