Irish Slip To Eighth Place After Two Rounds At The Nelson Invitational

Oct. 23, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. – Despite another strong round on Saturday, the Notre Dame men’s golf team fell to eighth place following the second round of The Nelson Invitational, hosted by Stanford University. The Irish carded a 12-over par 288 and currently have a two-round total of 567 (+15) entering Sunday’s final round. A trio of nationally-ranked teams — No. 5 New Mexico (546), No. 14 UNLV (547) and No. 18 Georgia State (554) — hold the top three spots through 36 holes at the 16-team event, which is being contested on the shortened par-69, 6,444-yard Stanford Golf Course (the circuit is undergoing renovation).

Saturday’s score of 288 marked the fifth time in the past three years that Notre Dame has registered a score of less than 290 at The Nelson Invitational. In fact, all five scores rank among the top 20 single-round totals in school history, with Saturday’s score tying for 19th place in the Notre Dame record books.

Junior Eric Deutsch (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) is the leading Irish golfer after two rounds, posting a three-over par 141 (69-72) to tie for 19th place in the 84-man field. Sophomore Cole Isban (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian) and freshman Mike King (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) are among a group of players tied for 25th place at four-over par 142. Meanwhile, freshman Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s) had the lowest score for Notre Dame on Saturday, carding a two-over par 71 and moving up to a 47th-place tie at six-over par 145 (74-71). Junior Scott Gustafson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) rounds out the Irish lineup with a 36-hole score of eight-over par 147 (71-76), putting him in a tie for 63rd place.

Notre Dame is back on the links Sunday morning for the third and final round of The Nelson Invitational beginning at 8 a.m. PDT (10 a.m. EST in South Bend). Complete results will be available on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) and via the Notre Dame Sports Hotline (574-631-3000, option #9).
