EAST LANSING, Mich. — After an overcast and rainy morning, the skies parted, the sun shone and the University of Notre Dame women’s golf team sparkled on the opening day of the Mary Fossum Invitational.

All six Fighting Irish players (five in the lineup and one individual competitor) shot 74 or lower in the second round on Saturday afternoon as Notre Dame opened up a four-stroke lead at 13-over par 589 (297-292) in the 12-team tournament hosted by Michigan State University at the Forest Akers West Golf Course (par 72/6,236 yards) in East Lansing, Michigan. Tulane is in second place at 593 (+17), while MSU holds down the third spot at 597 (+21).

“(The second round) was awesome,” said Fighting Irish head coach Susan Holt. “We got off to kind of a slow start this afternoon, but we really picked it up on the back nine. They all came back and played really solid. I’m looking forward to tomorrow — it’s going to be a good fight to the end and I’m anxious to see how we hold up.”

The defending tournament champion, Notre Dame has four players currently in the top 10 on the individual ladder, led by senior captain Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy), who paces a balanced Fighting Irish lineup while standing tied for fourth place in the 70-player field at two-over par 146 (74-72). Junior Jordan Ferreira (University Place, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and freshman Isabella DiLisio (Hatfield, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) are tied for sixth place at three-over par 147, with Ferreira posting rounds of 75 and 72, while DiLisio carded scores of 73 and 74.

Freshman Maddie Rose Hamilton (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) also is in the top 10, tied for 10th place at five-over par 149 (75-74). Sophomore Kari Bellville (Granger, Ind./Penn) rounds out the Notre Dame lineup, presently in 22nd place at nine-over par 153 (79-74).

Freshman Emma Albrecht (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez) is playing as an individual competitor this week and is tied for 18th place through two rounds at eight-over par 152 (80-72).

Notre Dame returns to the course at 8:30 a.m. (ET) for the final round of the Mary Fossum Invitational, looking for its third title at the event since 2010. Live scoring will be available through the BirdieFire web site (BirdieFire.com).
