Irish Set To Host In-State Foes Valpo & Purdue

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame closes its five-game homestand to start the 2019 season with matches against in-state opponents Valparaiso and #18 Purdue. The Irish will take on the Crusaders on Wednesday, September 4th at 7 p.m. ET before meeting the 18th-ranked Boilermakers on Friday, September 6th at 7 p.m. ET.

Wednesday’s matchup against Valparaiso is set to be televised live on the ACC Network while Friday’s contest vs. Purdue will be streamed via ACC Network Extra.

SERIES HISTORY VS. VALPO

Wednesday’s matchup will be the 29th all-time between the Irish and Crusaders, with Notre Dame holding a 24-4 advantage in the series. The last meeting between the Irish and Crusaders came on September 1st, 2017, when Notre Dame earned a 3-1 victory to open the 2017 season. That contest, which was a part of the 2017 Golden Dome Invitational, marked the first ever Notre Dame volleyball match played in the Compton Family Ice Arena.

SERIES HISTORY VS. PURDUE

Friday marks the 22nd all-time meeting between the Irish and Boilermakers, with Purdue holding a 15-7 advantage in the series.The two teams last met on September 2nd, 2018, when Purdue picked up a 3-1 victory in West Lafayette. Notre Dame and Purdue last played inside Purcell Pavilion on September 3rd, 2016, and the Irish knocked off #24 Purdue in four sets.

GOLDEN PERFORMERS

Freshman Caroline Meuth and sophomore Lauren Wenzel earned 2019 Golden Dome Invitational All-Tournament Team honors after helping the Irish pick up a pair of victories over the weekend.

Meuth led the Irish with 50 kills over the 13 sets of play last weekend, including a 21-kill effort in Notre Dame’s 3-1 victory over Bowling Green. Wenzel hit .417 with 19 kills over the weekend while also recording 12 blocks. Wenzel’s weekend was highlighted by an 11 kill (.667 hit %), seven block effort vs. Bowling Green.

SOPHOMORE TRIO EARNS PRESEASON ALL-ACC HONORS

Sophomores Sydney Bent, Charley Niego and Zoe Nunez were each named to the 2019 Preseason All-ACC Volleyball Team, the conference announced on August 9. In addition, the Irish were slotted fourth in the conference’s preseason coaches poll.

Notre Dame’s three Preseason All-ACC honorees are the second most in the conference. Bent, Niego and Nunez also represent three of just five sophomores to earn Preseason All-ACC recognition. In 2018, all three players earned both Second Team All-ACC and ACC All-Freshman Team accolades.
