Irish Set To Battle Towson In Shamrock Invitational

Jan. 25, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team closes out the home portion of the 2012-13 season this weekend as it welcomes in Towson for the annual Shamrock Invitational at Rolfs Aquatic Center.

The two-day meet gets underway at 5 p.m. Friday and continues at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Just one month out from the beginning of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships, the Irish are beginning to make preparations for the four-day meet. The Shamrock Invitational will offer the team one final opportunity to split up individual events over the course of multiple days rather than jam them in over the course of one day in a dual-meet format.

Notre Dame is coming off a tough loss on the road to Indiana (175-125) last Saturday. The Irish won seven events during the dual meet, including three by Emma Reaney (100 and 200 breast, 200 IM) and two from diver Jenny Chiang (1- and 3-meter). Also earning victories were Kim Holden (100 fly) and Bridget Casey (200 fly).

Taking a look around the BIG EAST the Irish lead in seven individual events heading into the weekend. Emma Reaney leads in the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 and 400 IM, Kim Holden leads in the 100 back and 100 fly and Kelly Ryan leads in the 200 back. The Irish are tops in four relays including the 200 and 400 free and the 200 and 400 medley.

Nationally, Holden is 17th in the 100 back (53.07), 20th in the 100 fly (52.98) and 21st in the 200 back (1:55.06), Ryan is 12th in the 200 back (1:54.05) and Reaney is fourth in the 200 breast (2:07.60) and 200 IM (1:55.05), seventh in the 100 breast (59.38) and 11th in the 400 IM (4:08.64). In the relays, the 200 free relay team is 19th (1:31.44), the 200 medley relay team is 22nd (1:40.23) and the 400 medley relay squad is ninth (3:35.16) and is already automatically qualified for the NCAAs. All three relays are composed of Holden, Ryan, Reaney and freshman Catherine Galletti.

The Irish close out the regular season Feb. 9 in Toledo, Ohio, with a dual meet with the Toledo Rockets.
