Irish Set The Stage For Championship Saturday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track and field program turned in several stellar performances on the second day as the hosts of the ACC Indoor Championships in the Loftus Sports Center. In all, the Irish claimed two medals on the day and qualified seven individuals to compete in the championships on Saturday.

Entering Saturday, the Notre Dame men’s team is in fourth place and the women’s team is tied for third on the leaderboard.

On the track, Matthew Carmody stole the show for the Irish on Friday. After leading the pack at the start of the race, the sophomore finished strong to take second in the men’s 5000m run with a time of 13:59.30, earning his first ever medal at the ACC Championships.

In the field events, Colton Crum had the team’s best performance of the day. The sophomore posted a career-best mark of 5.28m in the pole vault to place second in the event and also earn his first ever trip to the podium at the ACC Championships.

In the women’s 60m hurdles prelims, Naya Sharp and Summer Thorpe each had career days to advance to the Saturday finals. They each won their heats with a time of 8.26, a PR for both of them and tied for the third-best time in the conference this season.
