Irish Set For Trifecta Of Contests On Hawaiian Islands

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 21st-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team opens its spring break trip on the Hawaiian islands Monday as it faces off with Texas Tech at 5:00 p.m. (ET) at the UH Tennis Complex in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Irish then conclude the trip with matchups against Hawai’i and Wyoming on Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.

The Irish enter the week with an overall record of 9-4 on the season after recently completing a six-match homestand that saw them go 5-1. Three players rank nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls, led by senior Shannon Mathews at No. 52. Senior Kristy Frilling (73rd) and sophomore Britney Sanders (102nd) round out the singles rankings. Frilling and Mathews represent the lone Irish pairing ranked in doubles, checking in at second in the nation.

Scouting The Red Raiders:

This is the first ever matchup between Notre Dame and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders enter the matchup with a record of 11-2 on the season and rank 20th in the nation according to the ITA. Texas Tech currently rides a four-match winning streak, including defeating the host Wahine on Sunday, 6-1.

Elizabeth Ullathorne represents the lone member of the team in the singles rankings, checking in at 123rd. Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams rank 47th in doubles.

Scouting the Rainbow Wahine:

This will be the fifth career meeting between Notre Dame and Hawai’i with Notre Dame holding a 4-0 advantage in the series. This is the first battle between the two schools since 2008, a match the Irish claimed 7-0 at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai’i brings with it a ranking of 52nd while sporting a 5-6 overall record. No individuals rank in either the singles or doubles rankings.

Scouting the Cowgirls:

This also represents the first ever matchup between Notre Dame and Wyoming in program history. The 62nd-ranked Cowgirls currently carry a 7-4 record and have won their last three matches, most recently defeating Wichita State 5-2. Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici are the lone Cowgirls in the rankings, checking in as the 60th-best doubles team in the nation.
