Irish Set For Final Road Match Of Regular Season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 22nd-ranked University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team is set to conclude its road slate when the team squares off against Marquette at 11:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday at the Halfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis. The Irish enter the matchup with a record of 11-9 on the season.

Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) continues to lead the Irish in the rankings, checking in at fourth in the most recent ITA singles rankings (Apr. 12). She currently holds a record of 15-2 on the dual season, all at the No. 1 position, and an 81-26 career dual record with the Irish.

Two other Irish players find themselves in the singles rankings as well, with Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) claiming 64th and Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) climbing 10 spots to 95th. Frilling and Mathews also continue their climb up the doubles charts, ranking 15th in the ITA polls.

The Irish and Marquette have met 14 times in program history, with Notre Dame holding a 13-1 advantage. The Irish also have never lost to the Golden Eagles in the Jay Louderback era, posting a mark of 9-0 over that time. In the two teams’ last matchup, Notre Dame took down Marquette 6-1 in a home tussle on April 18, 2010.

Marquette enters Sunday’s matchup with a record of 17-8 on the year, but most recently lost a 4-3 decision to DePaul. Olga Fischer and Kelly Barry, who have each seen significant time at No. 1 singles, lead the Golden Eagles. Fischer holds a dual record of 9-3 at the No. 1 spot, while Barry stands at 5-8.
