Irish Send Six to Junior World Championships in Egypt

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Coming off the program’s 11th national championship last week, the Notre Dame fencing team is not slowing down as it is sending six members of the team to the 2021 Junior World Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Marcello Olivares, Luke Linder, Atara Greenbaum and Valentin Matveev will all be competing for the United States while Giorgia Giordano will be competing for Brazil and Nicholas Dinu will be competing for Canada.

The championships kick off in Cairo on Saturday, April 3 and will continue through the following Sunday, April 11.

Linder, Dinu and Greenbaum will begin the championships on April 3 in the individual sabre competition followed by the team competition on April 5. Olivares will be in the individual foil portion of the championships on April 6 followed by the team competition on April 8. Matveev and Giordano will take part in the individual epee portion on April 9 and then the team competition on April 11.

Olivares and Linder are both coming off individual NCAA championships this past weekend at Penn State while Greenbaum also competed at NCAA’s. Olivares has also claimed an individual medal on the world stage back in 2018 when he won silver at the Cadet World Championships.
