NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the fourth time in five years, the University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team will be showcased in the Jimmy V Classic presented by Corona against the University of Connecticut. The reigning national champions will host the Huskies inside Purcell Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN. The two sides have met every season since 1996.
“It’s an honor to be participating in the Jimmy V Classic,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. “In his famous speech, Jimmy V stated ‘Don’t give up, don’t ever give up,’ and I thought our young women lived by that mantra last season. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to spread Jimmy’s message in the ongoing fight against cancer.”
In Charlie Crème’s Way Too-Early Top-25 poll, the Irish sit at No. 1 for the 2018-19 season, while UConn checks in at No. 4. In last year’s Jimmy V Classic, Notre Dame led UConn heading into the fourth quarter, but the Huskies escaped with the 80-71 win in Hartford. However, Notre Dame earned revenge in the infamous 91-89 overtime buzzer-beating victory in the National Semifinal.
The Final Four win was the fourth NCAA Tournament victory against UConn in the program’s history, which more than doubles the next highest team. In fact, over the last 10 years, Notre Dame has defeated UConn eight times overall, while all other Division I teams have combined for just six wins.
The early-season event will be part of the 12th annual V Week for Cancer Research – the weeklong initiative across multiple ESPN platforms and programs featuring special content to help raise funds for cancer research. ESPN’s 2017 V Week for Cancer Research raised a record-setting $4.5 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Over the past 11 years, V Week has raised $22.2 million for cancer research.
