Flushing Meadows, N.Y. – Notre Dame’s stay at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships came to an end Saturday, but not before Irish seniors Quentin Monaghan and Alex Lawson reached the semifinal rounds of their respective draws.

After falling in the first round of the singles main draw, the fifth-ranked Monaghan made a run through the consolation bracket, picking up a win in the round of 16 on Friday. On Saturday, the senior standout defeated Indiana’s Samuel Monette 6-3, 7-6(0) in the quarterfinal round, but fell to the 23rd-ranked Dovydas Sakinis of Dartmouth in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Entering the day, Monaghan and Lawson – the nation’s 28th-ranked doubles squad – had combined for seven straight doubles wins, but the duo met their match in North Carolina’s No. 18 Brett Clark and Robert Kelly in the main draw of the semifinal, falling in a hard-fought three sets 7-6(3), 4-6, 10-6.

The rest of the Irish team will wrap up fall tournament play at the Bulldog Scramble on Sunday. Notre Dame will have nearly two months’ rest before the Irish open the dual season with a double header against Michigan State (noon ET) and Youngstown State (6 p.m. ET) on January 16, 2016 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
