NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Eleven individual wins went along with a relay victory Friday afternoon in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Rolfs Aquatic Center as the Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team defeated Utah, 118.5-112.5.

In the final dual meet of the 2010 calendar year, the Irish were bolstered by a pair of wins by diver Jenny Chiang as well as two-time victors Amywren Miller (50 free, 100 free), Samantha Maxwell (100 breast, 200 breast) and Kim Holden (100 back, 200 back).

Katie Casey (200 fly), Kelly Ryan (200 free) and Gracie Fredlake (10:15.51) also tacked on wins for the Irish.

The Irish (2-3) will return to action at the U.S. Nationals (Dec. 2-4) in Columbus, Ohio.

200 Medley Relay: The Irish and the Utes were virtually neck and neck after the backstroke, separated by only one hundredth of a second … Maxwell put the Irish in the lead by over a second … Utah begun to catch up on the fly leg … but Miller closed out the relay to lead the Irish to their first win of the evening … final time was 1:43.37 … Utah finished second in 1:44.05.

1,000 Freestyle: At the half way mark, Lauren Sylvester and Fredlake pulled ahead to a slight lead on the field … Fredlake went on to win the gold (10:15.51) … Sylvester took second for the Irish (10:20.48) … Utah’s Kayla Buck was third (10:35.99).

200 Freestyle: Jaime Malandra went out to the early lead in the race … teammate Kelly Ryan and Utah’s Sami Zuch pulled ahead, and at the touch, Ryan prevailed (1:52.30) … Malandra took third (1:54.40).

100 Backstroke: Holden blazed to an early lead and held off a late charge by Traycie Swartz (57.32) to win the gold for the Irish in 56.53 … Lauren Parisi took third (58.34).

100 Breaststroke: Maxwell powered home to post a two-second victory on the nearest competitor … she hit the wall at 1:02.78 … Lauren Stauder took second (1:04.78).

200 Butterfly: Casey was out to the early lead at the 100-yard mark … she held on for a convincing win in 2:01.08 … Utah’s Hannah Caron took second (2:02.31) … third went to Jana Willsey (2:06.54).

50 Freestyle: Miller took home the splash and dash crown in a quick posting of 23.13 … Natalie Edge of Utah claimed silver in 23.59 … Amy Prestinario wrapped up third (23.82).

1-meter Diving: Chiang (290.10) and Heidi Grossman (270.07) finished first and second, respectively.

100 Freestyle: A close race was capped off with a fitting end as Miller and Edge tied, hitting the pads simultaneously at 51.43 … Prestinario was in close pursuit (51.49) and took third.

200 Backstroke: Holden went out to a nearly two-second lead on the rest of the pool … she held on to win in 2:03.05 … Utah’s Caldwell (2:05.60) and Cox (2:07.20) took second and third, respectively.

200 Breaststroke: Maxwell held a slight lead on Stauder at the halfway mark … she held on to win her second event in 2:15.80 … Stauder claimed second (2:17.15) … Utah’s Maiya Otsuka took third in 2:19.62.

500 Freestyle: Midway through the race, Fredlake and Utah’s Zuch battled it out for the lead … it came right down to the wire, but Zuch (5:00.41) prevailed with Fredlake (5:00.60) touching just behind.

100 Butterfly: Casey was nudged out at the finish, taking second in 55.90.

3-meter Diving: Chaing took home the gold with 316.73 points … Grossman took second with a score of 306.83 … Utah’s Ellis Walters rounded out the top three with 262.05 points.

200 Individual Medley: Utah’s Caron was out to the early lead through the backstroke leg … Maxwell eliminated her lead on the breaststroke leg, but could not hold on through the freestyle … Caron took first in 2:04.17 … Maxwell took second with a 2:04.90.

400 Freestyle Relay: Utah heading out first with a split of 51.45 … and the Utes maintained the lead through the second and third legs heading into the anchor portion … Notre Dame made it interesting at the end (3:26.27) but could not overtake the Utes (3:25.75).
