Irish Roll Early in Win at Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team was back on the court Sunday afternoon as they took on the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Irish took the doubles point before winning three of the first four singles matches that finished, clinching the match at 4-1. Notre Dame improves to 6-1 on the season, with Illinois falling to 2-3.

After dropping the top doubles flight, Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman came up qith a 6-2 win at No. 2. Rylie Hanford and Yashna Yellayi clinched the point with a 6-3 in the final doubles match.

Singles play started with the Illini evening the match at one with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4. Page Freeman was dominant in singles play, defeating Kate Duong at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3 to regain the lead. Bojana Pozder and Akari Matsuno iced the match with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No, 6, respectively. Pozder finished first at 6-2, 6-4, with Matsuno earning a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win. The final two matches went the way of the Illini, as each needed a tiebreaker in the final set to earn the result.
