ANN ARBOR, Mich. – University of Notre Dame standout Billy Pecor put forth an impressive showing as he breezed toward a spot in the quarterfinals in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships singles qualifying rounds on Thursday at the University of Michigan.
The 6-2 senior Pecor made quick work of Valparaiso’s Michael Savaglio, 6-1, 6-1, to open the day, and similarly dispatched IPFW’s Daniel Cardenas, 6-1, 6-2, to lead the Fighting Irish.
Brendon Kempin and Wyatt McCoy also moved into the second round, but advanced no further. Kempin dropped Detroit’s Rafael Orantes, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Northwestern’s Alberto Zanotti, 6-0, 6-1. McCoy defeated IPFW’s Andres Cabos, 6-4, 6-3, but fell short against Michael Sinha (Wisconsin), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Meanwhile, Michael Fredericka fell to Northwestern’s Alp Horoz, 3-6, 4-6, and Drew Dawson dropped a match to Charlie Ernhardt of Valparaiso, 3-6, 1-6.
Pecor will take on Detroit’s Patryk Kocielski in Friday’s quarterfinal round, which begins at 8 a.m. The first round of the main doubles draw gets underway at 1 p.m. and the main singles draw is slated to begin at 3 p.m., with the Irish entering a strong contingent in each draw. The doubles field includes the second-seeded duo of Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor, and the ninth-seeded tandem of Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar. The Irish entries in the main singles draw include No. 9 seed Josh Hagar and No. 16 Covalschi.
