Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team will see the 2004 season continue as the Irish received their second-ever at-large bid to the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament. The Irish will travel to Evanston, Ill., on Thursday, May 13 to face the sixth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats in a 3:00 p.m. game at the Leonard B. Taylor Athletic Complex on the Northwestern campus.

Notre Dame, ranked 13th in the most recent IWLCA poll, will take a 12-4 record into Thursday’s contest while Northwestern is 14-2 on the season and will make its first NCAA appearance since returning to varsity status three years ago.

The two teams met on April 20th at Northwestern with the Wildcats taking a 9-5 decision on a rainy, windy day in Evanston. The Irish lead the all-time series, two games to one, with the first win in the series coming at Northwestern in 2002.

“We are very excited to be going back to the NCAA tournament,” said head coach Tracy Coyne.

“This was a goal that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year and the team worked hard this season and overcame some obstacles to put themselves in this position. They are very deserving of the bid and we are very excited about our first game versus Northwestern on Thursday.”

Coyne and her squad look forward to playing one of their regional rivals – Northwestern.

“It’s great to have a chance to face Northwestern again this season. They had a great season and had some very impressive wins this year. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing them again. It should be a great game,” said Coyne.

Notre Dame’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament came in 2002. The Irish defeated Ohio State, 11-7, at Moose Krause Stadium before falling in the quarterfinal game at Princeton, 11-5. Princeton went on to win the NCAA title that year and again in 2003. The Tigers are the top-seeded team in this year’s tourney with a 16-0 record.

The winner of the Notre Dame-Northwestern game will advance to play on Sunday, May 16th versus the winner of the Virginia-Mount St. Mary’s game. Virginia is the #3 seed in the tournament.
