Irish Return From Puerto Rico To Face Northwestern

Jan. 13, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With its winter training session in the books, the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team returns to the Rolfs Aquatic Center for its first dual meet of 2012 against Northwestern at 2:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.

Live results will be available at UND.com and on Twitter (@NDswimming). The meet will also be streamed live on UND.com with Ryan Camden calling the action.

Notre Dame (4-3) ended a 20-year drought by posting a dual meet victory over Northwestern in 2011, surging to a 160-140 victory over the Wildcats at the Norris Aquatics Center in early January. The win was the first for Notre Dame against the Wildcats since the 1990-91 campaign and soothed a 10-meet skid to the Big Ten foe during that stretch.

The Irish look to build on their momentum gained at the Iowa Invitational in December and the Copa Coqui held several days ago during the program’s winter training session in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Notre Dame defended its title at the exhibition event on the sunny island behind wins from Frank Dyer (100m free), Cameron Miller (100m breast), Kevin Overholt (50m free), Colin Babcok (200m IM) and Petar Petrovic (100m back). The win was the second in as many years for Petrovic. Even more, the Irish once again claimed the gold in the always-spirited Pineapple Relay (500m free relay).

The Irish netted 78 points to finish first among the eight-team field.

Petrovic’s efforts in Puerto Rico came on the heels of representing the Irish at the European Short Course Championships held in Poland prior to Christmas break. Petrovic helped his native Serbian teammates reach the finals of the 4x50m medley relay for the first time ever. Petrovic went 25.10 in the 50m back for a national record while opening for his relay tandem which finished ninth in 1:36.73.
