NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball team returns to the road for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series at Virginia Tech to kick off Easter weekend. The Irish and Hokies are slated for a single game on Friday night before capping the series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Notre Dame (21-11, 5-3 ACC) recently completed a five-game homestand at Melissa Cook Stadium, the first official home contests of the 2018 season for the Irish. This weekend’s trip to Blacksburg is the penultimate regular-season road trip for Notre Dame, along with an April 20-22 weekend set at Boston College.

Road Warriors Back In Their Element

After posting a combined 19-8 record away from home to open the 2018 season, Notre Dame returns to the road for this weekend’s series at Virginia Tech. The Irish have outscored opponents by a 141-86 cumulative run count away from home this season, are 7-2 thus far on an opponent’s home field and have won five straight road games since a doubleheader sweep at North Florida on March 13.

ACC Road Trips Kind To The Irish In 2018

Over the first two visits to ACC foes this season, Notre Dame passed each test to the tune of a 4-1 record. The Irish took one game at NC State on March 10 before sweeping Louisville on March 16-18 for the first three-game sweep by either team in series history.

Notre Dame has outscored ACC opponents 36-10 in road games this season, batting .328 as a team with 45 hits. The Irish also maintain a 31-9 edge in RBI in ACC games away from home.

Irish In The ACC Statistics Standings

After 32 games played in 2018, Notre Dame remains the top team in the ACC in batting average with a .307 clip. The Irish rank second in the conference with 256 hits, third with a .376 on-base percentage and .440 slugging percentage and fourth with 161 runs scored.

Individually, Ali Wester is tied for the conference lead with a .434 batting average despite only batting in 26 of 32 games for Notre Dame. Abby Sweet is fifth in the ACC with a .468 on-base percentage powered by her league-high 13 times hit by pitch, while Sweet and Wester are tied for fifth overall in the conference with 36 hits apiece.

Irish Against The Opposition

Notre Dame enters this weekend’s series with a 23-6 all-time record against Virginia Tech, which has spanned tenures for both clubs in the BIG EAST Conference and the ACC. The Irish have also fashioned a 6-2 record all-time in games played in Blacksburg. Notre Dame has won the past 12 games contested between the teams since 2014, outscoring the Hokies 81-30 in that span.
