NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend (Thursday-Sunday) as it takes part in both the ITA National Individual Indoor Championship in New York, N.Y., and the Eck Tennis Classic hosted on the campus of the Irish.

Senior co-captains Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) represent the Irish contingent that will head to the National Indoor Championships, as the pairing earned an automatic bid to the doubles draw by winning the flight at the Midwest Regionals. Frilling and Mathews put together five wins at the tournament, including a win over the top-seeded and third-ranked Northwestern pairing of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton (8-2), to secure the title. Notre Dame’s duo enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face Georgia’s team of Chelsey Gullickson and Lilly Kimbell in a round-of-16 matchup Thursday.

Frilling also will take to the courts in the singles main draw after earning an at-large bid into the 32-member draw. She will tussle with USC’s Zoe Scandalis in opening round action, which also takes place Thursday.

The remainder of the Irish roster stays close to home over the weekend, playing host to the Eck Tennis Classic now in its 19th installment and second consecutive season. The format for the event sets up as a round-robin tournament with respective members of each of the team’s represented at the event facing each other Friday through Sunday.
