NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team was selected as a Scholar All-America Team for the fall 2012 semester, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced recently. The reigning two-time BIG EAST Conference champions earned the 25th-best team grade point average nationally at 3.20.

The award is presented annually by the CSCAA to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented to teams achieving the standard in the fall semester and in the semester of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

“This is one of our goals every season, to succeed in the classroom as well as in the pool,” Notre Dame head coach Tim Welsh said. “To finish among the top 25 in academic excellence is something that we have always been proud of, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes.”

Notre Dame has finished within the national top 25 in grade point average on 21 different occasions since 1990. The Irish have posted a top 10 grade point average nine times in that span, including a national-best 3.35 during the spring of 1999.

Senior Bill Bass was chosen as an individual CSCAA Scholar All-American in the spring of 2012, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to receive the honor.
