Feb. 3, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to play host to the 24th annual Meyo Invitational, beginning Friday at 5:00 p.m. (ET) at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The two-day event welcomes track and field top talent from across the United States.

The action begins Friday at 5:00 p.m. (ET) with the men’s long jump and continues through Saturday.

The ever-popular Meyo Mile begins Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (ET) with the men’s race, followed by the women’s competition. Set to compete in the Meyo Mile for the Irish men is sophomore BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week Jeremy Rae (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic). Rae is currently ranked eighth in the 800-meter run, nationally. He won the honor after finishing in first place in 1:49.15 at the Indiana Relays last weekend.

Another notable race is the Ryan Shay 3,000-meter run, in honor of former Notre Dame standout Ryan Shay. Shay concluded his career with the Irish as a nine-time All-American, twice for cross country and six times between indoor and outdoor track. Additionally, Shay earned second-team Academic All-America honors and was an eight-time (four in cross country and four in track and field) monogram winner.

Set to compete in the shot put on the women’s side is senior Rudy Atang (Houston, Texas/St. Pius X). Atang was last in action at the Indiana Relays where she claimed third place (15.10m) in the Shot Put Invitational.

Admission to the Meyo Invitational and all Irish home track and field meets, is free to the general public. Complete results from the Notre Dame Invitational will be available upon conclusion of the meet at und.com.
