Jan. 3, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — With Notre Dame’s opening meet against William & Mary just two weeks away, the Intercollegiate Tennis Assoication (ITA) has released its preseason rankings, slotting the Irish in the 29th spot.

The Irish finished the spring of 2013 ranked 31st, meaning they will open up this next season two places higher even after graduating three seniors last year.

Individually, senior Greg Andrews enters the season ranked No. 22 after being named BIG EAST Player of the Year for the second consecutive season last year. Andrews also moved up nine places from his preseason ranking of 31st in September.

The 2012-13 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, sophomore Quentin Monaghan, is also ranked No. 90 in singles. Monaghan was ranked 98th to open up the fall of 2013.

Additionally, the Irish have two doubles teams in the ITA rankings. Andrews and sophomore Alex Lawson have been slotted at No. 21 after a successful run to the finals of the Midwest Regional Championships in October. Sophomores Kenneth Sabacinski and Nicolas Montoya also enter 2014 ranked 51st.

Notre Dame kicks off the spring season on Friday, Jan. 17 against William & Mary at 6 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
