Irish Rally To Claim Share Of Gopher Invitational Title

The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team rallied on the final day of competition at the 2021 Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independance, Minnesota, to shoot a combined nine-under-par in the final round and earn a tie with Kansas for the team title (838 strokes).

“We take great pride in our mindset and mental toughness and that led to our success this week,” Irish head coach John Handrigan said after the competition.

“Apparently we were in last place halfway through the first round but we kept fighting and to come back to win is impressive. To shoot the low round of the tournament during the last round in the toughest conditions we saw this week is special. It says a lot about our players’ grit and competitiveness.”

Palmer Jackson led the Irish with a six-under-par 207 to finish tied for fourth overall on the individual leaderboard. Taichi Kho was right behind him in sixth with a five-under-par 208 while Davis Chatfield highlighted the late rally for the Irish with three birdies in his final three holes played, eventually shooting a 67 in the final round (211 overall, 13th place).

The tournament victory is the first for the Irish since they claimed first place at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Florida on October 21, 2019.
