Irish Push Forward In ITA Regional Midwest Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Irish are one step closer to claiming the singles and doubles crowns at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Three of Notre Dame’s four doubles teams made it to the round of 16 yesterday, and the eighth-seeded team of senior Jennifer Kellner and freshman Monica Robinson made through to the quarterfinals today after beating DePaul’s Patricia Fargas and Rebeca Mitrea, 8-4.

Senior Britney Sanders and junior Molly O’Koniewski fell to Melissa Kopinski and Allison Falkin of Illinois, 8-4. Senior Julie Sabacinski and freshman Mary Closs lost to Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee, 8-4.

After the morning doubles matches, the Irish moved into two rounds of singles play. Second seed Sanders had a first round buy, but cruised to an easy victory over Northwestern’s Lok Sze Leung without dropping a single game, 6-0, 6-0. Kellner also had a first-round buy before defeating Northwestern’s Nida Hamilton, 6-3, 6-1.

Robinson is still in it as well after winning her first match against Ohio State’s Sandy Niehausm 6-1, 6-4 and then taking down Western Michigan’s Kathleen Hawkins, 6-2, 6-4.

Closs won her first match against Lauren Burich of Wisconsin, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Kopinski, 6-3, 6-3.

Day four of the six-day tournament begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinals. The doubles semifinals will take place directly after with the singles semifinals starting at 1:30 p.m.
