Irish Prepared for Split-Squad Competition

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track and field team will travel across the country for three split-squad meets beginning on Thursday.

The Irish will have student-athletes competing at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (Austin, Texas), the Bobcat Invitational (San Marcos, Texas) and the Stanford Invitational (Palo Alto, Calif.) this weekend.

Texas Relays: What to Watch

Notre Dame will send several sprinters, throwers and jumpers to the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, beginning on Thursday. The Irish will compete in nine events at the meet.

Senior Tommy Grant and sophomore Zachary Zajdel will race in the men’s 100m dash, while freshman Michaela Butler and sophomore Kyla Lewis will run in the 100m dash on the women’s side.

Freshmen Naya Sharp and Summer Thorpe are scheduled to race in the 100m hurdles.

Riding a third-place finish in the hammer throw (60.98m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational two weeks prior, senior Anthony Shivers will compete in the discus and the hammer throw at Texas. Senior school record-holder Indi Jackson and freshman Abigail Kapitan will throw the shot put.

Senior Nathan Richartz will jump in the pole vault for the first time since the national championship, and junior Hunter Holton and sophomore Matthew Birzer will compete in the high jump.

The meet will feature a field of 7,700 athletes, including high school and professional athletes. A total of 17 countries and 37 states within the U.S. are represented in the entries.

Bobcat Invitational: What to Watch

Notre Dame has multiple sprinters and jumpers competing at the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State over the weekend.

Several Irish student-athletes will sprint in the 200m dash, including freshmen Naya Sharp, Michaela Butler and Summer Thorpe, sophomores Kyla Lewis, Zachary Zajdel and Edward Cheatham and senior Tommy Grant.

Senior Taylor Craft will compete in the 100m hurdles and in the triple jump.

Stanford Invitational: What to Watch

Sophomore Anna Rohrer will make her debut in the 10,000m race and her first appearance of the outdoor season after winning the bronze medal in the 5,000m at this year’s NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Rohrer will race alongside graduate student Kathleen Darling and senior Lexi Pelletier in the women’s 10,000m race.

Graduate student Danielle Aragon, senior Jamie Marvil, juniors Jessica Harris and Stephanie Knight and sophomore Kelly Hart will race in the 800m.

Aragon will race in her second 800m in as many weekends, and she also will race in the 1,500m. The Billings, Montana, native, ran a 2:09.84 and came in seventh place overall at the Raleigh Relays last weekend.

Another Irish distance runner, sophomore Annie Heffernan, will make her return to the track for the first time since the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Heffernan and junior Ashlyn Rambo will race in the 5,000m.

Graduate student Sydni Meunier, coming off of a personal record set at the Raleigh Relays, is scheduled to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase.

After finishing eighth overall in the mile at the 2017 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships (4:06.32), freshman Ryan Schweizer will travel to Stanford to compete in the 1,500m. Schweizer will join junior Billy Dolan and senior Christopher Marco in the race.

Marco and Schweizer also will suit up for the 800m, alongside graduate student Eric Gebeke, freshman Clay Goldman, junior Kirk Hansen and senior Patrick O’Connell.
