The 69th Annual Blue-Gold Notre Dame football game will played played on Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Notre Dame Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EST and the game will consist of four 12-minutes quarters.
There is no live televison or radio for the game and thus, the UND.COM website will be the only “live” broadcast of the game. The UND.COM website will feature “live” stats updated constantly during the contest.
The game will be played in the expanded Notre Dame Stadium (with its 80,225 capacity) for the first time. The last two years, with the Stadium under construction, two spring scrimmages each year were held on Notre Dame’s Cartier Field practice field.
The game is sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley and helps raise funds for that organization’s scholarship fund. In 1997-98, students from the Michiana area attending Notre Dame are receiving more than $35,000 in scholarship aid from this fund.
The game itself is an intrasquad contest for the ’98 Irish squad on the last of its 15 allotted days of practice this spring. Notre Dame begins its spring drills on Saturday, March 28.
Following the Blue-Gold game, an autograph session will be held involving all members of the current Irish team.
All seats for the game are general admission. Tickets in advance are $6 for adults and $3 for youths 16 and under. On game day tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for youths. Group sales of 50 or more tickets are available at $4 per ticket. All Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross students are admitted free with identification. Members of the Notre Dame Kids Club receive one free ticket with each adult ticket purchased.
Advance tickets can be purchased at the Joyce Center ticket office (on the second floor, enter Gate 1) from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be ordered by mail by writing Ticket Office, Joyce Center, Juniper Road, Notre Dame, IN 46556 (add $2 service charge per mail order). Phone orders are accepted using VISA, Mastercard or American Express by calling 219-631-7356 ($2 service charge per phone order).
Ticket orders should be received by Monday, April 13, to insure prompt mail delivery of tickets. Orders received the week of the game will be held at will call (east side of Stadium). Photo identification is required for pickup of any tickets at will call. Game day ticket sales at ticket windows on the east side of the Stadium begin at 9:00 a.m.
The Irish return 15 starters this spring (including punter Hunter Smith), seven each on offense and defense.
On offense, the returnees are two-time 1,000-yard rusher Autry Denson at tailback, wide receivers Malcolm Johnson and Bobby Brown, Jabari Holloway at tight end, Mike Rosenthal and Jerry Wisne at guard (Rosenthal is projected to switch to tackle) and Luke Petitgout at tackle.
Defensively, the starters back are end Brad Williams, outside linebackers Kory Minor and Lamont Bryant (he’s projected to switch to end), inside linebackers Bobbie Howard and Jimmy Friday, and safeties Benny Guilbeaux and Deveron Harper (he’s projected to move to cornerback).
With the graduation of four-year starter Ron Powlus, the Irish will head into 1998 with a new signalcaller under center. Candidates for that job are senior Jarious Jackson, junior Eric Chappell and sophomore Zac Kustok.
The Irish open the ’98 schedule September 5 with a home game against defending national champion Michigan. The first four opponents on the ’98 slate all are teams that defeated Notre Dame in ’97 (also including Michigan State, Purdue and Stanford). One change from the original ’98 agenda saw the Irish game against Michigan State in East Lansing, originally set for September 19, moved to September 12 so ABC Sports can televise the contest in prime time (8:00 p.m. kickoff).
