Irish Play Host To Michigan State In Fall Exhibition

Sept. 16, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame baseball team will host Michigan State in an exhibition contest at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Frank Eck Stadium. The exhibition game is open to the public and admission is free.

The Irish and Spartans – who will go toe-to-toe on the football field later Saturday – began this fall exhibition tradition in 2010. Notre Dame and Michigan State played on the afternoon of last season’s gridiron meeting in East Lansing.

“Our team is excited about this weekend’s exhibition game with Michigan State,” second-year Irish head coach Mik Aoki said. “It not only gives the coaching staff a tremendous opportunity to evaluate our players in a game setting as opposed to practice, but it also gives the players a chance to compete against someone other than themselves.

“It is an opportunity for our fans to see our entire team as well, literally all 32 available players will likely see action, which is not the case in the spring. It will be a nice way to start a football Saturday.”

The Irish dropped a 4-2 decision to the Spartans in last year’s exhibition matchup, but Notre Dame used wood bats, while the Michigan State used aluminum.

Notre Dame’s annual Blue-Gold Fall World Series opens on Oct. 7 and closes on Oct. 9. All games are free and open to the public. The three-game intrasquad series will be played out to its completion, weather permitting, regardless of outcomes.
