Irish Place Three On Tewaaraton Award Watch List

Feb. 22, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Three University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse student-athletes are on the watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top player. John Kemp (Sr./G), Jim Marlatt (Jr./M) and Sean Rogers (Sr./A) are among the 92 individuals on the list.

The watch list includes players from all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse. The selection committee is comprised of top collegiate coaches and is appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. The committee will make additions to the list as the season progresses.

The list will be narrowed to 25 nominees in late April. Five finalists will be selected in mid-May. The finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 30 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.

All three Fighting Irish players were instrumental in Saturday’s 13-5 season-opening victory at Duke.

Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) and the Notre Dame defense held Duke scoreless for the opening 29:31 of the contest. He made 10 saves in the contest and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Last season, Kemp led the nation in goals-against average (6.27) and save percentage (.637). He earned first team All-America honors and was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. Kemp received honorable mention All-America accolades as a sophomore.

Marlatt (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) registered career-high totals in goals (5), points (6) and ground balls (5) in the victory over the Blue Devils. Two of his goals were part of Notre Dame’s 6-0 run to start the game. He was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Duke. Marlatt notched 19 goals and 12 assists last season and was first team all-BIG EAST in addition to earning an honorable mention All-America citation.

Rogers (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) netted two goals in the season-opening victory. That was the 17th multiple-goal game of his career. The fifth-year senior has 76 career points on 56 goals and 20 assists. Rogers, a Fighting Irish team captain, earned first team all-BIG EAST honors last season.

The three Tewaaraton Award watch list selections matches the most ever for the Fighting Irish, who also had three student-athletes on the list in 2010 and 2011. Kemp was one of 25 nominees for last season’s award.

The third-ranked Fighting Irish return to the field Sunday at No. 8 Penn State. The contest is slated for noon (ET) inside Holuba Hall in University Park, Pa.
