NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team has a long history of attaining success on the field and in the classroom. The Irish squad captured the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship crown and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Championships.
On Tuesday, nine members from the team were named to the ACC All-Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team. The team was comprised of 33 student-athletes representing all five of the league’s men’s lacrosse programs. Notre Dame’s nine honorees were tied for the most of any program with Duke.
Five of Notre Dame’s nine recipients have now earned the distinction multiple times in their career, with senior John Sexton leading the way with his fourth honor. Bryan Costabile, Hugh Crance, Brendan Gleason and Mikey Wynne were recognized for the second time in their careers, while Arden Cohen, Carlson Milikin, Matt Schmidt and John Travisano each made their first career appearances on the distinguished list.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
The honor is just the latest in a long list of distinctions for Sexton following his storied career. The senior was earned the Schmeisser Award, given to the top defensive player in the country by USILA. Sexton also earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors to go along with being a unanimous first team All-American selection.
Costabile enjoyed a breakout season for the Irish in 2018. The sophomore led the team in goals with 30 and earned second team All-America distinctions. The midfielder played his best lacrosse of the season at the ACC Championships, leading the Irish to the title while earning MVP honors, all while playing with a broken jaw.
Crance anchored a young defense that was the best in the ACC, allowing just 8.6 goals per game, ranking ninth in the country. The defenseman earned honorable mention All-America distinction and started every game for the Irish.
Despite battling injuries for a portion of the season, Gleason was one of the top attacking players for Notre Dame in his junior campaign. The attackman/midfielder scored 19 goals and added 14 assists to total 33 points, the third most on the team. Gleason earned All-ACC honors and honorable mention All-America status.
Wynne finished his Notre Dame career ranked third in program history in career goals scored with 126. The attackman found the back of the net 20 times in his senior campaign, adding four assists. Wynne was also a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
Cohen made an instant impact in his debut season with the Irish, starting all 15 games as a defenseman. The freshman ranked third on the team in ground balls with 39. Cohen not only excelled on defense but also played a pivotal role in the success of the Irish face-off game.
Milikin made a major impact in his only season on the field for Notre Dame. The short-stick defensive midfielder played in every game for Notre Dame in 2018, causing nine turnovers and collecting nine ground balls. The senior did not record a single turnover all season.
Schmidt played in all 15 games for the Irish, serving as the team’s primary goalkeeper. The freshman allowed just 8.35 goals per game to lead the ACC and rank ninth in the country. Schmidt was named to the ACC All-Tournament team after he helped lead the Irish to the title.
One of the most improved players for the Irish this season was Travisano, who went 145-of-257 from the X for a face-off win percentage of .564. The FOGO ranked second in the ACC in face-off winning percentage. Travisano won a career-high 17 face-offs in the win over Ohio State.
