Irish Pick Up First BIG EAST Win With 12-9 Victory Over Rutgers

Notre Dame, Ind. – Junior midfielder Lena Zentgraf (Charlottesville, Va.) scored the first hat trick of her Notre Dame career and added an assist for a career-high four-point game and Crysti Foote (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) added three goals to pace the Irish to a 12-9 win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Moose Krause Stadium.

Caitlin McKinney (Fr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) scored twice for the Irish while Jackie Bowers (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) and Mary McGrath (Jr., Bryn Mawr, Pa.) added solo goals in the Notre Dame victory.

Katie Batiuk led the Scarlet Knights with four goals and two assists in the game. Kate Shomo, Emily Widrick, Anne Marchitello, Jamie Farewell and Sarah Soden each scored once for Rutgers.

The win, the first of the year for the Irish in BIG EAST play improves them to 3-6 on the year and 1-2 in conference action. Rutgers falls to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST.

The Scarlet Knights took the play to the Irish early as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead just under five minutes into the game. Batiuk (1:29) and Widrick (2:05) gave Rutgers a 2-0 lead before Zentgraf got her first of the game at the 3:49 mark. Batiuk set up Shomo at 4:26 to put the Scarlet Knights back up by two goals.

From there, the Irish would score nine of the next 10 goals on the afternoon. Foote got her first of three at 7:27 and Zentgraf scored on a free-position shot at 12:22 to tie the game at 3-3. Bowers beat Rutgers goalkeeper Lyndsey Feldman with a low shot just 14 seconds after Zentgraf’s goal to put Notre Dame ahead for the first time in the game at 4-3. Zentgraf closed out her three-goal game at 17:16 as the Irish went ahead 5-3.

Batiuk broke the Irish four-goal scoring spree with her second goal off a Lindsay Rising assist at 20:10. Foote and McKinney closed the first-half scoring with goals at 28:09 and 29:18 to give Notre Dame a 7-4 lead at halftime.

The Irish lead would go to 10-4 as Notre Dame scored the first three goals of the second half. McKinney set up McGrath just 1:25 into the second half. McKinney then picked up her second goal of the game at the 3:14 mark and Foote closed out her three-goal day at 7:53.

Neither team would score for nearly 15 minutes when Rutgers ended Notre Dame’s five-goal run on a Marchitello goal at 22:32.

Fox would answer that goal with a pair of scores 55 seconds apart at 22:55 and 23:50 to give the Irish a 12-5 lead. Rutgers would then score the final four goals of the game over the last 4:17 of the contest.

Soden (25:43) and Farewell (25:57) scored 14 seconds apart and Batiuk added her last two goals at 28:09 and at 29:55, the last goal coming on a free-position shot, to close the scoring at 12-9.

In the game, Notre Dame out shot Rutgers by a 29-25 margin. Feldman finished the game with nine saves in the Rutgers goal while Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) had nine saves for Notre Dame.

The Irish will continue their five-game homestand on Friday, April 8 when they play host to the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Moose Krause Stadium. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
