Irish Pair Roll Into Doubles Quarterfinals At All-American Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s tennis seniors Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar remained undefeated in doubles this season, picking up another win and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships on Friday at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.

The 26th-ranked Irish duo defeated 15th-ranked Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen of New Mexico in Friday’s Round of 16, winning 7-6(6), 1-6, 10-6. Covalschi and Hagar are now 6-0 on the season and will face Wake Forest’s third-ranked Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim not before 4 p.m. ET Saturday.

Hagar also advanced to the singles consolation Round of 16 after defeat Duke’s 14th-ranked Nicolas Alvarez 7-5, 6-0 earlier in the day. He will face Virginia’s No. 69 JC Aragone at noon ET Saturday.

The rest of the Irish kicked off the first day of the Bobby Bayliss Invitational on Friday at their home Courtney Tennis Center. The Irish picked up five singles wins by juniors Brendon Kempin and Drew Dawson; sophomores Alex Lebedev, Daniel Rayl and Nathan Griffin; and freshman Johnathan Small.

Play will resume at 9 a.m. ET Saturday.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
