NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame track and field teams open the 2011-12 indoor season this Friday, when the Irish host the annual Blue & Gold Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center.
The meet begins at 5 p.m. with the women’s high jump and the men’s pole vault. The track events get underway at 6 p.m. with the women’s and men’s 60m hurdles.
Joining the Irish for the opening meet will be competitors from Bethel College, Butler, DePaul, Detroit and Marquette.
“It’s an opportunity for the student-athletes that don’t run cross country, but have been training all fall, to see where they are at in terms of their training and conditioning,” said head coach Joe Piane. “It compares to an exhibition game for basketball. This is sort of an exhibition for us and probably the other teams as well.”
The Blue & Gold Invitational will be the first of four indoor meets the Irish will host this year. Other indoor home meets include the Notre Dame Invitational (Jan. 21), the Meyo Invitational (Feb. 3-4) and the Alex Wilson Invitational (March 2-3).
