Irish Open Season With Day One Of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Notre Dame track and field program got the outdoor season underway on Thursday at day one of the Raleigh Relays.

A day after being named the ACC Cross Country Men’s Runner of the Year, Yared Nuguse won the 5,000m run with a time of 13:40.62, the top mark in the country in the young season. The time is good enough for fourth in program history.

A trio of other Notre Dame runners also had notable times in the 5,000m run, as Matthew Carmody took third place (13:44.55 – sixth in program history), Kenny Vasbinder finished fifth (13:45.95 – eighth in program history) and Andrew Alexander placed 13th (13:54.94 – 10th in program history).

The Notre Dame duo of Michael Shoaf and John Stefan had a solid showing in the men’s shot put event, recording third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Shoaf set a personal record with a mark of 17.71m to move up to fourth place in program history and John Stefan aslo set a personal best with a throw of 17.61m to rank fifth in school history.

The Irish also flourished in the javelin events on both the women’s and men’s sides. Gabe Diederich claimed fourth for the women with a throw of 46.02m and John Keenan took fifth place with a personal record distance of 63.74m, good enough for third in the Notre Dame record books.

The Irish are back in action on Friday for day two of the Raleigh Relays, starting with the women’s discus at 10 a.m. ET.
