Irish Open Competition at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. – The Irish track and field squads opened competition at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday, earning seven top-five finishes on the first day of action.

Eric Quick finished second in the men’s long jump, while Kevin Schipper earned a fourth-place finish in the men’s pole vault. Jeremy Rae, Jordan Carlson and Johnathan Shawel wrapped up the 2-3-4 positions in the men’s 1500 meters as Daniel Clark took the top spot in the men’s 1500 meter Olympic Development University/Open heat. On the women’s side, Nevada Sorenson finished third in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Irish will continue competition at Mt. SAC and will get underway at the Long Beach Invitational and Purdue’s Dave Rankin Invitational throughout the weekend.

Mt. SAC Relays Results

Men’s 10,000m: Jake Walker finished 23rd in 30:05.68. William & Mary’s Jon Grey won the event in 28:40.33.

Men’s Pole Vault: Kevin Schipper finished fourth at 5.20m (17-00 3/4), followed by Matt Schipper in eighth at 5.10m (16-08 3/4).

Men’s Long Jump: Eric Quick recorded a mark of 7.51 (24-07 3/4) to finish second, just behind Boise State’s Zacharias Arnos in first at 7.72m (25-04).

Men’s 1500m: Irish runners took the 2-3-4 positions led by Jeremy Rae in second in 3:45.73. Jordan Carlson finished third in 3:46.43 and Johnathan Shawel finished fourth in 3:46.77. Iowa State’s Brandon Rooney won the event in 3:45.40.

Men’s 1500m Olympic Development University/Open: Daniel Clark was the top runner in 3:43.23, followed by Utah Valley’s Andrew Graham in second at 3:43.70 and Providence’s Hayden McLaren in third at 3:43.95.

Women’s 800m: Jamaica’s Althea Chambers won the event in 2:07.49. Kelly Langhans finished seventh in 2:09.15, Abby Higgins was 10th in 2:10.69 and Natalie Johnson finished 18th in 2:13.10.

Men’s 800m: Blake Choplin finished 16th with a time of 1:52.42, and Cameron Eckert was 30th in 1:53.84. Georgia’s Aaron Evans was first in 1:49.54.

Women’s 100m Hurdles: Janay DeLoach, competing unattached, was the top sprinter in 13.73, just ahead of Nevada Sorenson in third at 13.55. Kali Watkins finished 35th in 14.92.

Men’s 5000m: Ohio State’s Jake Edwards won the event in 13:57.03. Dan Jackson finished eighth in 14:01.43.
