Irish Open ACC Play Against Virginia At Arlotta Stadium

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 4/4 Notre Dame opens Atlantic Coast Conference play against No. 7/9 Virginia at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at Arlotta Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and can be streamed on the WatchESPN app or at WatchESPN.com.

The Virginia Series

  • Saturday will be the 12th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Virginia. The Irish lead the series 6-5.

  • The two teams met last season in Charlottesville, Virginia, with Notre Dame escaping with a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory. Then-sophomore Ryder Garnsey provided the heroics, scoring the golden goal to secure the Irish win.

  • Notre Dame has won each of the last five meetings against the Cavaliers, including all four matchups in conference play.

  • Four of the last five meetings have been decided by two goals or less.

Irish In The ACC

  • The Irish have a combined record of 11-6 in its four seasons of ACC regular season play and 14-9 when ACC tournament games are included.

  • Notre Dame also has found success in the ACC tournament, winning the 2014 championship and reaching the title game last season.

  • The Irish went a perfect 4-0 in 2015 to win its first regular season conference title and followed up with a record of 3-1 in 2016 to claim a share of the regular season championship.

  • Notre Dame has not dropped a conference opener since joining the ACC, posting a mark of 4-0.

  • The Irish hold a 6-3 record over the first four seasons of league play in Arlotta Stadium.

Notre Dame Vs. Top 10 Teams

  • Notre Dame is 33-24 against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USILA Coaches Poll since the start of the 2008 season.

  • The Irish are 13-11 against teams ranked in the top five in the USILA Coaches Poll since 2012.

  • Notre Dame is 1-1 this season against ranked teams, defeating No. 5/4 Denver 11-9 and falling to No. 2/2 Maryland 12-10.

Protect This House

  • Since the beginning of the 2015 season, the Irish are 23-2 when playing at Notre Dame.

  • The Irish are a perfect 3-0 this season heading into this weekend’s showdown with Virginia, allowing fewer than 10 goals in each of the three home contests.

  • Notre Dame went 7-0 in 2015, 7-1 in 2016 and 6-1 in 2017.

Moving Up In The Ranks

  • Senior attackman Mikey Wynne ranks sixth in program history in career goals with 112. (Full rankings in sidebar on page 4).

  • Wynne passed former teammate and 2017 graduate Sergio Perkovic (110) with two goals at Maryland (3/3).

  • Wynne is just the eighth player in program history to surpass the 100-goal mark, as he scored three times against Army in the final regular-season game of the 2017 season on May 6 to reach the milestone.

Crance Earns ACC Honors

  • Junior defenseman Hugh Crance was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week on March 12.

  • Crance anchored an Irish defense that allowed then-No. 5/4 Denver to score just nine goals, its lowest amount in a game this season.

  • The distinction marks the first weekly conference honor the junior has earned in his career.

Gleason Going Off

  • Junior Brendan Gleason is tied for the team lead in points with 12 this season (8 goals, 4 assists).

  • The midfielder turned attackman was named to the USILA Team of the Week following his four-goal performance in the 11-9 win over No. 5/4 Denver (3/10).

  • Gleason had a day to remember against Richmond, matching his career high in points with six (3 goals, 3 assists) in the victory.

  • Gleason has five career hat tricks, two coming this season.
