Irish Open 2021 Season With Notre Dame Invite

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — On Wednesday, the Notre Dame men’s and women’s track teams played host to the Pittsburgh Panthers and Louisville Cardinal at the ND Invitational in the Loftus Sports Center. The Irish posted multiple top-10 all-time performances over the course of the meet.

The men’s and women’s teams combined to win seven individual events on the day with four coming from the men’s side and three from the women’s squad. Both the men’s (78 points) and women’s (79.5 points) team finished second overall for the meet.

In the men’s pole vault, Colton Crum notched a first place finish, setting a mark of 5.20m, just .08m away from matching his personal best mark.

John Stefan’s personal best 19.69m effort in the weight throw earned him a second place finish on the day and ties him for third all-time in program history.

The Fighting Irish men claimed the top four spots in the 800m run, led by Samuel Voelz who posted a time of 1:48.81, vaulting him to sixth all-time in program history. Parker Jones (1:53.17), Luke Phillips (1:57.55), and Connor Shields (1:57.85) all turned in sub two-minute times to add to the effort.

In the mile run, the Notre Dame men again dominated the race, posting the top five finishes. Brian Griffith led the Irish with a time of 4:12.28.

On the women’s side, Rachel Tanczos put together a strong overall showing on the day. She turned in a mark of 21.34m in the weight throw to finish second in the event. Additionally, the senior added a win to her resume by posting a 14.49m mark in the shot put.

In her collegiate debut, Jadin O’Brien finished second in the 60m hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.54, which ranks ninth all-time in program history.

Another freshman on the women’s side that made an instant impact was Madison Schmidt, who won the high jump with a height of 1.71 in her first meet as a member of the Fighting Irish.

AnnaSophia Keller took the women’s mile race by crossing the line first in 4:53.30.

The Irish next travel to Columbia, SC, for the South Carolina Invitational on February 5.
