Irish One Stroke Back After First Two Rounds Of The Shoot-Out At The Legends

Oct. 4, 2004

Franklin, Ind. – Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) had another solid day on the course to pace the 18th-ranked Notre Dame women’s golf team on day one of the Shoot-Out at the Legends tournament. The Irish fired a 26-over par two round total of 602 to stay one shot in back of the leader, Illinois State, heading into the final round of play at the par 72, 6,134 Legends Golf Course. Brophy, a junior co-captain, is in a three-way tie for fourth after carding a five-over par 149 (74-75) on the day. The 12-team field will conclude play tomorrow.

The Irish are hoping to capture their second consecutive victory of the season after winning the Jeannine McHaney Invitational/Central Regional Preview on Sept. 26. The team has kept the momentum going as Brophy along with teammates Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), and Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) all fired two-over par 74’s in round one. Brown shot a 78 during the afternoon’s second round and is currently in 13th-place overall. Gebauer is one-stroke back and in a tie for 14th with a 153.

Junior co-captain Suzie Hayes (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto College) maintained consistent play during both rounds as she fired a 154 (76-78) to place in a tie for 17th. While most of the Irish golfers saw their scores rise during the afternoon, Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) managed to fire the team’s top round of the day during the second 18-holes of play. The sophomore followed an uncharacteristic 84 with a one-over par 73 and is now in a tie for 23rd. Freshman Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula) completed the the day with a 166 (80-86) for the Irish.

Kent State’s Gabby Wedding is atop the leaderboard after firing a pair of 73’s, while Michigan’s Brianna Broderick and Illinois State’s Ashlie Rose both sit in a tie for second with a four-over par 148.
